LOOKING BACK POETICALLY AT THE PAST

excerpt from Looking for Lago di Lecco

            Seaside to Mountains Closing Stretch

Just before dusk the
Orient Express pulls into
Venezia Mestre. Two pigeons
hushed upon the wires above
getting ready
to settle in for the evening
pay little or no heed
at their own business, the chefs
in the carrozza di servizio
preparing dinner, and in
the carrozza ristorante tables
being laid,     reverently
platform people pull out
tablets, cameras, phones to record
this momentous romantic train event, lamps glow
accommodatingly on the restaurant tables,
their fringed shades blush pink.
From the neighbouring platform a regional pulls out
ushering in
low gold rays gleaming dim
on navy blue and white paint,
on brass window fittings,
on the simple stained glass
ovals which punctuate each and every carriages’ ends
as one and all we ride off into the dusted sunset
